Artist's Description

As a two-year old girl, Sadako survived the atomic bomb blast in Hiroshima. Nine years later she developed leukemia. She waged a heroic battle against the disease. During her battle she folded over one thousand origami cranes, heeding the advice of an old Japanese folk story that doing so would bring her a wish.

Despite her courage and grace, Sadako could not beat leukemia but her legacy lives on as the origami crane has become an international symbol of peace.
